MORE ZUNE NEWS:
Superintendent Patricia Miller was interviewed June 27 on the Lou Dobbs Radio Show about how podcasts are enhancing the classroom experience for FSHS students. Mrs. Miller's five minute interview is a little more than halfway into the broadcast. Use the following link: http://loudobbsradio.com/audio/fullshow/062708/Lou_062708_Hour3.mp3
Fort Sumner High School's Zune project has gained national attention since an article written by Felicia Fonseca for the Associated Press was published. Appearing in Seattle, the Clovis News Journal, www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1816958,00.html - 39k - , the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, the Boston Herald, San Diego, KCBY TV in North Bend Oregon, www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/21/ap/national/main4199965.shtml - 77k - , and numerous other publications, within hours the story had spread across the country in print and news formats, including National Public Radio and ABC Ch. 7 News. A quick Google search using "Zune" and Fort Sumner, NM yields more than ten pages--and that number will continue to climb as more publications carry the article. Sixty-six publications or their websites have carried the story reaching a viewership of 41 million!

Ms. Fonseca spent May 13, 2008, in Sherrie West's computer lab in the High School, observing and interviewing people. Photos of Ms. West, Superintendent Miller, and students Keily Burds and Kyla Walraven are included in some of the articles. Quotes from student Ashley Stinnett, Teachers Sandra Wertheim, John Wootton, and Pam Richards, and Superintendent Miller are also published.

Congratulations, Zunies, students, and staff! It is amazing how quickly information is spread nowadays about FSHS and innovative teaching techniques via traditional outlets and the internet.

May 2008 Update
The last three weeks of school are a flurry of activity with our BPA students competing in the Nationals in Reno and 24 of our Foxes and Vixens competing in the state track meet. Once we add in the elementary music program (May 8th at 7 PM), Kindergarten graduation (May 16th at 6:30 PM), 6th grade graduation (May 19th at 6 PM), Baccalaureate (May 18th at 7 PM), and Senior graduation (May 23 at 7 PM) it seems like every night brings a new cause for celebration and rejoicing. We celebrate with these students and their families as we enjoy these milestones together.

I know it was a bit odd to dismiss school at 2:30 PM on a sunny day this week, but it is hard to ignore a call from the National Weather Service warning of tornados headed for De Baca County. While considering the options, I determined that safety had to come first. The National Weather Service had not made a personal County phone call before, so the urgency expressed by the meteorologist had to override my observation of sunshine. Overall the inconvenience of dismissing school an hour early did not seem so bad when the considering the possibility of riding out a tornado watch with students and staff packed in hallways. Thank you for your ever present support and good humor about inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Miller
